The Lodge at the Presidio occupies the former Montgomery Street Barracks, which the US Army constructed between 1895 and 1897 within the Presidio of San Francisco to house six artillery companies, a cavalry troop, and two infantry companies. Battery F of the Third Artillery Regiment was the first army unit to occupy the north side of the building. The New York Times described the structure as a "restored 1897 brick Colonial Revival barracks building that housed successive waves of soldiers throughout much of the 20th century." The building served as hospital wards during the Spanish-American War of 1898 and the Philippine-American War of 1899, and later housed students in Reserve Officers Training Camps during World War I; enlisted personnel vacated it as barracks in 1980. The Presidio Trust's own press materials characterize the building as a "stately red brick" structure facing the Main Parade Lawn.
The 42-room, three-story hotel opened in 2018 and is owned by the Presidio Trust and managed by Waterford Hotels and Inns. It is San Francisco's closest lodging to the Golden Gate Bridge. The property achieved LEED Gold certification from the US Green Building Council in 2021, following a rehabilitation executed under the principles of adaptive reuse. The Lodge has been a member of Historic Hotels of America — the official program of the National Trust for Historic Preservation — since 2018, and is also a member of California Green Lodging. In 2022, it received the Historic Hotels of America Sustainability Champion Award. In Condé Nast Traveler's 2024 Readers' Choice Awards, the Lodge ranked #5 among San Francisco hotels with a score of 97.5, marking its debut appearance on the list.
